About Waipoua Forest
The largest remaining stand of kauri, the mighty conifer that once covered much of northern New Zealand. Tane Mahuta, the Lord of the Forest, measures 4.4 m across and may be 2,000+ years old. Night tours find North Island brown kiwi foraging on the floor. A pathogen called kauri dieback disease threatens the ancient giants, and cleaning stations guard the tracks.
