About Muir Woods

An old-growth redwood grove just north of San Francisco, saved from logging by the Kent family in 1905 and named for conservationist John Muir. Some redwoods are 800 years old and nearly 80 m tall. Fog supplies much of their water in the dry summer months. A national monument since 1908. The quiet floor of ferns and sorrel shows how the coast ranges once looked.
