Fontainebleau Forest
About Fontainebleau Forest
A former royal hunting forest an hour from Paris, famed for ancient oaks and honey-toned sandstone boulders. Painters of the Barbizon school worked here in the 1800s, founding modern landscape painting. In 1861 a portion became one of the worlds first protected nature reserves, saved for its scenery. The boulders gave birth to bouldering, and climbers from everywhere still test themselves on the sandstone.
